Heatherwick studio’s new shopping centre at London’s King’s Cross, was formed by converting and extending two Victorian industrial buildings that were used previously to store coal from the North of England that was transported across the country. Connected by an undulating roof, it creates a feeling that the old buildings have been physically stretched towards each other.

If the weather is fine you might sketch near Stanton Williams’ old granary building, transformed into Central St Martins art and design school, or Wilkinson Eyre’s Victorian Gasholders, now a housing development. If the weather is not so fine there are many interesting views inside the buildings spacious and interesting interior.

How do I get there?

Coal Drops Yard is just a few minutes’ walk from King’s Cross and St Pancras rail and tube stations. As you exit the stations, follow signs for Regent’s Canal. Cross the canal and Coal Drops Yard is to your left, just off Granary Square.

Meet at the Tom Dixon shop between 6:30 – 6:45. From here we will walk to the site.

If this is your first Sketchmob just carry a sketchbook with you and somebody will welcome you.

Sketch until 8:30, meet up again to look at our sketches, then retire to a local pub for a brief drink prior to leaving.

Meeting point: 4-10 Bagley Walk Arches, Coal Drops Yard, King’s Cross, London, N1C 4DH
